Day Six of Our US Adventure: The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Music!

Today has been one of those days we won't forget!
Full of "firsts!"
After a rather long, but interesting drive up to Vermont, we found a roadside diner in "small town America"

The Specials board was one like I have never seen before...Creamed ham and eggs over Biscuits...Homemade haddock fishwick...Carrot and Ginger soup with grilled cheese sandwich...

...and it was that final item that I chose.
The soup was very similar to some of my soups....almost a puree!
It was DELCIOUS and I cant wait to experiment when I get home.
I would judge it had sweet potato in as well as carrot and a hint of ginger.

This was on the wall behind me....it just about sums up how we feel about our friends over here.

Hubby and I have been huge Norman Rockwell fans since we lived here in1996.
It was lovely to see this picture on display, with us inside a real diner.

As we continued driving north, we started to see signs of what must have been a cold winter!

Before we knew it, we were arriving at our destination

The mountain views from our window are spectacular

And the snow just next to our balcony shows it has indeed been a long cold winter for them up here in Vermont.

Our room is decorated with photos of the Von Trapp family...

...which was a delight to see.

I have been enjoying learning more about the real family in this book, left in the room, and I hope we can buy a copy in the gift shop tomorrow morning.

The bathroom is well stocked with toiletries...which I will of course bring home rather than use!

Even the spare loo roll has a little extra touch added!

The room is charmingly  decorated in true Austrian style.

After unpacking we headed down to the pool...which was great fun.
We played family water volley ball and a 17yr old from Michigan, who looked rather lonely, was happy to join us.
We then discovered this wonderful outdoor hot tub!
The memory of enjoying the soothing jets in this deliciously hot water, overlooking the Vermont mountains, will stay with me forever!
I kept pinching myself to make sure it wasn't a dream!
I didn't take my camera, but managed to find this picture online so you can at least see something of what we enjoyed.

Finally, we watched a documentary film on the real Maria...what a character she was!
The film did her life justice...albeit there were some deviations....nothing that detracted from the real story...and Maria herself was happy with how she was represented so that speaks volumes.
We are now enjoying the lovely bedroom and mountain views.
This has been a most remarkable day!

Day Five of Our US Adventure: Teen One Makes A New Friend!

Today was all about visiting friends again.
Having spent six months living here, we managed to make rather a lot of friends and visiting them all is our number one priority...and to be honest...its the prime reason for our regular visits back.
The friends we met up with today love this "Dairy Store" which has remained unchanged since it opened many years ago.
It has the same "retro style" and for us is like living in a scene of "Happy Days!"
The food is good, I chose clam chowder, followed by a small butter pecan ice cream sundae.
They are renowned for their "Cheese furters" which are hot dogs with a slice of fried cheese!

It was then time to hit the shops again.
First a craft store ( heaven!) then a local Mall.
We had a lovely surprise when we bumped into our friends daughter in law and granddaughter.
Little Sweetheart had fallen in love with Teen One earlier in the day and was delighted to have this chance meeting.

The two of them headed over to a play area in the Mall and they became inseparable.
We had to say our goodbyes eventually and Little Sweetheart was sad to be leaving her new friend....

...however it wasn't for long. After a little nap, she came back to our friends house with her parents, for us all to enjoy a delicious meal together.
The couple spent the evening playing ball, reading books and generally having a good time.

Washing up is never a chore in this home....this is the view from the kitchen window!

I love this new addition to their dining room!

I forgot to show you yesterday all of our purchase...Teen One already has a large Bloom Bible, and when we saw these small versions, half price, we couldn't resist one.

Neither could we resist this beautiful t shirt with the opening lines to the hymn
"Amazing Grace"

Our days are full of treats and renewed friendship...as well as making new friends...
we feel truly blessed.

Day Four Of Our US Adventure: Hitting The Shops!

Today was a day I have been looking forward to...revisiting our favourite "local" shops.
Of course nothing is really "local" here in the US...it always entails a rather long drive somewhere.
We visited three or four shops, managing to make a dent in our spending budget...but what is spending money for!
Supermarkets are always a hit, and we always see so many things we want to try out, bring home for ourselves or for gifts.
We had to smile when we saw that there wasn't any lack of ginger biscuits over here!

Teen One is a Pop Tart fan, over in the UK we have a very limited choice of flavours....whereas over here in the US there are choices aplenty!
She settled on Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam....mmm, that one sounds very appealing to me!

As we left the supermarket this sign caught my eye!
What a treat it would be to have this back home in the UK!!

There seemed to be plenty of activity choice.

After some retail therapy we visited one of our favourite restaurants.
It is "family style" not the sort of place you would go to for the ambience...however for good priced, wholesome, homecooked food, it is perfect.

There are several food stations...each having over a dozen choices...

Choosing what to sample is so hard...even taking just a small portion of what you fancy, makes for a huge plate full...and you can go time and time again!

Something I can never get my head around...is jelly, marshmallow and sweet whip in with the salad and often eaten with meat!
When the Teens were tiny they LOVED this treat when we came over!
I always take a little for dessert for old times sake!

After a very substantial lunch  (costing us the grand sum of around £25) we went to see an old friend....at 92 I am sure he wouldn't mind me saying he was "old!"
We spent over three hours chatting and enjoying his company.
Family are never far from our thoughts....so it made us smile to see this street name en route home!

Its been a great day, with bags full of treats to bring home, tums full of delicious food, and our hearts warmed by the company of dear friends.

Day Three of Our US Adventure: "Think Blot!"

We seem to have adjusted pretty much to the time change...just waking a little earlier than usual, but that was no bad thing today as we had an hours drive ahead of us to church, which was starting at 9.30am!
We had visitors for breakfast!
We never tire of seeing these special visitors.

I really love these little red cardinals....and this is the first one I have seen this time round.
I hope to get a clearer picture next time...he didn't hang around for me to take a second picture!

It was good to be back here, and a little treat for us is not having to scour the streets for a space to park the car, they have their own car park at the back.

We spent the day with another set of friends...I so love the way the Americans decorate their homes....what lovely pots don't you think!

After a delicious meal, we played this game for the first time, which was great fun!
It is very reasonable and I can see a purchase coming on when we get home!

It has been another lovely day and we feel like we are in a dream!

March 26th Day Two of Our US Adventure....A Bridal Shower

So today was the much anticipated Bridal Shower.
We have seen these on films, but never been part of one, Teen One especially was looking forward to it.
It was easy to spot which house we were visiting!

The skies were beautiful, showing off the typical New England clacker board house...
I never cease to be bowled over by the simple beauty of this classic style.

The front door was beautifully adorned....

...as was every corner of the house with these beautiful fresh roses...

....the pink theme continued in the hallway....

...garlands festooned the door ways...

...every corner held a surprise...

...even the soft drinks were pretty...

...this strawberry and basil infused water was my favourite...I really really want to find one of these drink dispensers to bring home with me...

...this was the start of the present table, which increased considerably as the guests arrived....

....these cupcakes were original...complete with silver wedding rings.

Food was "brunch" and there were so many unusual and scrummy foods on offer I had to sample them all!!

I didn't manage to get a photo of the table when it was completely laden...but this granola was delightful and I had to go back for seconds!

After the food it was time for some fun....questions about the bride and groom...

...then Design your perfect husband!

There were presents for the winners...

...all pink of course!

We learnt that each bow that is taken off the gifts are made into a decoration with a paper plate as the base...the bride then wears it as a hat or it is tied into a bouquet...today it was a hat!
As the ribbons are taken off the presents these are collected...all uncut ones represent how many children the couple will have!
If this comes true, then this couple will have six bouncing babies!

All in all we had a wonderful day!
It ended by going back to friends for a meal...which was delicious!
It has been a great start to our adventure and we are so thankful for all our US friends who make our stay so special.
